k Obama!Many Americans never imagined they would see a black Pesident. Only 50 years ago, Black leader Martin Luther King was fighting* for equial* rights for blacks.
Until 1964, there was racial segregation in many southern* states* of the USA. Blacks and whites could not go to the same schools or the same shops. Things have changed a lot!
Black and white !
Barack obama is of mixed race. His father was a black economist from Kenya. His mother was a white anthropologist form Hawaii.
They met at university and divorced when Barack was three years old. Obama lived in Hawaii with his white grandparents. "It's like a mini-United* Nation," he says about his family.
Hard work and ambition !
Obama was always hard-working* and ambitious. He worked as a civil rights lawyer*,a professor at law* school and he became a US DEmocratic SEnator.
He resigned* from the US Senate after. winning the Presidential election.
A family man!
Obama and his wife* Michelle have two girls: Malia age ten, and sasha, age 7.
They used to live in Chicago, Illinois. Now they live in the White House, The Presidential residence in Washington DC. Obama's family was very visible during his campaign. But Obama wants his children to live normal lives*, away* from the TV cameras.
A difficult job !
There are many economic problems in the USA anad the world today. Finding a solution will be difficult for the new President. But when Obama Won* The election and became the first black President, he provid to the nation, and the world, that " yes, we can". He gave hope* to a nation, and a world, that neede hope.
